What is Homeopathic Medicine?

Homeopathy is a form of alternative medicine that is holistic, scientifically based, safe to use, inexpensive and curative of chronic disease. It was founded by Samuel Hahnemann over 200 years ago, although the principles on which it is based have been utilized in healing for thousands of years. Homeopathic remedies work through activating the body's own powers of self regulation and self-healing. Since its inception, homeopathy has benefited people from all walks of life and of any age, in countries all over the world. Homeopathic medicine is the second most common form of alternative medicine in the world today and the most common form of alternative medicine in North and South America.

The word homeopathy comes from the Greek "homios" (meaning similar) and "pathos" (meaning suffering). One of the basic principles is the "Law of Similars" which states that substances which can cause certain symptoms in healthy people can cure those same symptoms when they occur in an ill person. This is already known in conventional medicine through treatments such as allergy desensitization shots and vaccinations. Hahnemann rediscovered this ancient principle when he took quinine (a substance noted to treat malaria) and began to develop all the symptoms of malaria. Over time, he began to do 'provings' in which he would give homeopathic substances to healthy people and carefully record the symptoms of the remedy.

Another important principle in homeopathy is that each of us is unique. The same diet, the same advice and the same homeopathic remedy will not necessarily help everyone with the same disease. Homeopathy treats the individual and not the disease. Through striving to find the unique remedy that fits the individual, the door is unlocked to their own self healing.

Classical homeopathic treatment only uses one remedy at a time to treat and cure chronic disease. A homeopathic evaluation generally takes several hours and focuses on deeply understanding an individual on all levels of his/her being (physical, emotional, mental and spiritual). The homeopath is also concerned with symptoms that are idiosyncratic of the person or uniquely define who they are. Examples include sleep position, food cravings, favorite hobbies, dreams, fears and many others. Based on the symptoms that are elicited when the case is taken, a single remedy is then chosen which most closely matches those symptoms. Homeopathy is not only effective in treating chronic disease, but also highly effective in treating acute disease and in first aid.

There are over three thousand homeopathic remedies from which to choose. These consist of herbs, plants, minerals, metals and animal products which are prepared in such a way to bring out the healing power of the substance. They are quite safe, gentle and do not produce side effects. They are also quite inexpensive compared to the cost of standard medical treatment.

Homeopathy brings the individual to a greater level of health and more resistance to disease. Health in homeopathy is defined as freedom-freedom to express oneself on all levels of being.

About the American Medical College of Homeopathy

Overview

The American Medical College of Homeopathy (AMCH) is a 501c3 non profit organization located in Phoenix, Arizona. It has been offering education in homeopathic medicine since 1999. Its programs are licensed through the Arizona State Board for Private Postsecondary Education and accredited through the Council on Homeopathic Education. We are currently the largest homeopathic school in the United States and renowned for excellence in homeopathic education, research and clinical care. In addition to its current part time programs, AMCH plans on opening a full-time four-year homeopathic medical school in 2011.

Medical Center

The AMCH Medical Center provides community healthcare needs to the public and offers a clinical setting for students to learn the practice of homeopathic medicine. The AMCH Medical Center has the reputation of providing the finest homeopathic care in the Southwest. Homeopathy heals by stimulating the body's own healing resources. It works on chronic conditions as well as acute, diagnosed or undiagnosed. Patients are treated on all levels of their being, including physical, emotional mental and spiritual dimensions. It is the presentation of the disease by the patient, rather than the disease itself (patient-centered medicine) which become the focus of treatment.

The AMCH Medical Center house the teaching clinics for the American Medical College of Homeopathy. The AMCH Medical Center is the largest homeopathic clinical training site in the country. The medical center is also a site for externships and preceptorship rotations for students from other disciplines. Research is also integrated into the clinical training. By placing an emphasis on quality of patient care, quality of education and high academic standards, AMCH is setting the standard for clinical homeopathic education.

The AMCH Medical Center offers multi-disciplinary primary medical care for common, serious and chronic health conditions for the entire family. The staff of homeopathic physicians treat patients of all ages using a variety of natural alternative for healing, treatment of chronic and acute medical conditions and staying well. In addition to the services available at the Medical Center, The AMCH Pharmacy and Bookstore are located adjacent to the Medical Center. The Pharmacy is the largest homeopathic pharmacy in Arizona and provides professional quality homeopathic medicines at both prescription and non-prescription levels.

Research

AMCH has established a homeopathic Institutional Review Board (IRB) to guide research projects. This is the first of its kind in the country and accepts both internal and external submissions.

AMCH conducts homeopathic community research. This is the only institution in the United States that conducts such research. This research explores the demographics and success of homeopathic patients, practitioners and educators in the homeopathic community. The results are available on our web site. To date, AMCH has conducted a National Homeopathic Practitioner Study, National Homeopathic Patient Study and is in the process of completing a National Homeopathic Educational Study.

AMCH conducts homeopathic practice based research by doing provings. Provings are a method to determine the healing power of natural substances. To date, AMCH has conducted provings fourteen different homeopathic medicines, many of which are local Arizona substances.

AMCH supports and participates in homeopathic clinical science research demonstrating the efficacy and power of homeopathic medicine. Most recently it participated in a study investigating the efficacy of homeopathic treatment in fibromyalgia. This was conducted through the University of Arizona and was funded by a NIH grant.

AMCH conducts an annual national homeopathic research conference. This is the only conference for homeopathic researchers from around the country to gather and to work together in a supportive collaborative environment.

The AMCH Research Committee consists in leaders in the national homeopathic research community. This committee meets regularly to promote national homeopathic research. AMCH plans to build a homeopathic research institute as part of its future campus. This research institute will be the first of its kind in the United States and provide a home for national homeopathic research.

Debbie has a BA in Human Potential/Holistic Health from Prescott College and is a graduate of the British Institute of Homeopathy and the American Medical College of Homeopathy. She formed her company, Family Homeopathy, Inc. in 2001.

She has been involved in the Phoenix Homeopathic community since 1990. She was one of the first members of the Phoenix Homeopathic Study Group and served on the board of that group for 11 years. In addition to her private practice, she is on the faculty of the American Medical College of Homeopathy. She is the secretary of the local Professional Homeopaths Alliance and continues to promote homeopathy as the best alternative medicine on the planet!

I am excited to be involved with Jyl and Shape Up Arizona! I've met Mark with the Russo family and have talked with Kerin; mom of the clan! We've set up our appointments for the two of them and will be making appointments for the three boys soon.

I've sent them to the local health food store that has homeopathic remedies to pick up the remedy Arnica Montana for the aches and pains that come with starting a physical exercise program! Arnica works much better than ibuprofen and is better for them! (No side effects!)

Homeopathy is a great modality and helps the body to heal on the physical, mental and emotional levels. I will be helping them to balance these levels and heal in a very deep way. The body knows how to heal itself and homeopathy spurs the body on and helps the body to heal itself. Remember, the symptoms that you have are the body's way of telling you that something is wrong - it is the body's response to a problem!

We will be updating everyone as we go along - remember, in homeopathy, the body actually heals itself and it usually takes some time! It took time for it to get sick and it will take time to heal. Homeopathy is not a bandaid - it initiates a curative response with the body and truly helps the body to cure itself!
