African choir sings for poverty relief

At first glance, it's hard to imagine that "some of them really come from very terrible and really disgusting situations and home environments," says music director, Sam Kiberu.

But, all 29 members of the Matsiko Childrens Choir have overcome very long odds to be the voice of a generation that hopes to break the cycle of poverty in East Africa.

So in English or in their native Ugandan, their message of hope was loud and clear for about 400 kids at Benchmark School in Phoenix. "Even though people could lose everything, they could still be great," fourth grader, Jacob Venger said.

For the past ten months the choir has been reaching out with success to kids of all ages, but they still know there's work to be done back home and elsewhere. "They have no voices, but we are a voice for them so that some people can help them go to school, bring them up from their disparate realities and all that can be had," choir member, Mable Nfssuna said.
