Phoenix priest arrested for failing to register as sex offender

Wilputte "Lan" Sherwood, a Phoenix priest who served a 10-year sentence for sexual contact with a minor, was arrested outside a Catholic church in San Francisco on Sunday.

He was wanted for probation violation and failure to register as a sex offender.

U.S. Marshals and task force members from the Phoenix-based Child Predator Apprehension Team made the arrest.

Sherwood, 63, left prison in 2003 and disappeared two years later.

Sherwood faces extradition proceedings for his return to Arizona. He also faces federal charges for failing to register as a sex offender.

Sherwood worked at four parishes in the Phoenix Diocese. He was suspended from the priesthood upon his conviction in 1993.
