5 Tips to help you manage your teen's sleep

The bell rings 20 minutes earlier at Gilbert's high schools this year. Gilbert Public Schools is among some districts expanding high school hours.

Officials say they tacked on the time after revisiting, and reinterpreting the state law. Class now starts at 7:30AM and this year's "A" hour begins at 6:30AM.

Parent Suzan Baroni says,"It just seems so burdensome for teens to have to get up so early when they have so much else to going on in their lives."

Student Rebecca Standfast says,"I don't want to get a back grade because I'm really tired and can't pay attention."

Superintendent, Gilbert public schools Dave Allison says,"I appreciate the opportunity to increase the instructional benefit for our students and that's what I'm all about."

Superintendenet Allison says he understands parents' concerns. He's says starting earlier rathar than staying later was easier on the bus schedule. Still, the district plans to study the impact of the new scheudle.

Here are five tips to helping you manage your child's sleep :

Plan and stick to a consistent sleep schedule.
regardless of age, establish a regular bedtime routine which includes 15-30 minutes of calm, soothing activities. No TV. No cell phone. No computer. Light tells the brain to stay awake.
Help you teen balance schedules and prioritize activities.
Make sure they are eating healthy and exercising. Extra pounds can even put children at risk for sleep problems.
