Avoiding killer heat

The weather's number one killer during the monsoon is not flash floods or violent winds. Heat-related illness causes many more deaths. Dr. Robert French, an expert on emergency medicine with the Maricopa County Department of Public Health, says about three-quarters of the Valley's heat-related deaths last year happened during the monsoon months of July and August.

Dr. French says higher humidity during the monsoon makes it harder for the body to cool itself. But there are other factors, such as cloud cover and the number of consecutive days of extreme heat.

The county Department of Public Health website has information on risks and prevention of heat-related illness. There's also a link to other resources on this topic.
