Spurrier sticks with Smelley at QB

It'll be at least another week until the people's choice at South Carolina, freshman Stephen Garcia, starts his first game at quarterback.

Gamecocks coach Steve Spurrier named sophomore Chris Smelley to open against Mississippi on Saturday. And unlike he did a week ago, Spurrier did not guarantee that Garcia would see any action at all.

When specifically asked if Garcia would take several snaps, Spurrier answered, "Like I said, Chris Smelley will start the game and we'll see how it goes to try and win the game."

Washington State

A few days of spirited practices have produced some new injuries as Washington State prepares to play at UCLA on Saturday, coach Paul Wulff said.

"We're fairly banged up," he said.

Backup running back Chris Ivory is questionable with a hamstring injury, and third-stringer Logwone Mitz is slowed by a turned ankle, Wulff said.

Offensive-line starter Steve Ayers also might miss the game with a sore neck, and receiver Daniel Blackledge is questionable with an injured shoulder, the coach said.

Game called off

Georgetown's scheduled game Saturday at Colgate has been called off because of an outbreak of norovirus at Georgetown that was exposed to several players.

A decision hasn't been made whether to attempt to reschedule the game.
