40,000 expected at Glendale festivities

With 40,000 people expected to attend Friday's Fourth of July festivities at Glendale Community College, 6000 W. Olive Ave., traffic at the campus and nearby Sahuaro Ranch Park will be heavy.

Although storm-drain installation continues along 59th Avenue, traffic restrictions have been lifted and construction equipment and barricades will be removed.

However, 63rd Avenue is closed between Olive Avenue and Mountain View Road from noon to 10:30 p.m.

At GCC, games and rides are available for kids to enjoy. Bleacher seating is available at the college stadium, along with acres of grass throughout the campus and at Sahuaro Ranch Park for blankets and lawn chairs. Coolers are permitted inside the stadium but are subject to search upon entry. Glass containers and alcohol are prohibited. Food and beverages will be available for purchase.

Friday's schedule

1 p.m. - Free swimming at GCC pool.

6 p.m. - Gates open for evening celebration. Admission is free.

7 p.m. - Entertainment features Airman 1st Class Samantha Renner performing the national anthem, an F-16 flyover by Luke Air Force Base's 63rd Fighter Squadron and local cover band The Walkens.

8:40 p.m. - Fireworks display.
