Police precinct has new leader

The Squaw Peak Precinct welcomes a new commander next week.

Phoenix native Allen "A.B." Smith, who has served 22 years with the Phoenix Police Department, will take over the position since Cmdr. Frank Sweeney is moving to a position in downtown.

In his most recent post, Smith served as a liaison between the city manager's office and the Police Department.

Question: What are your plans for the precinct?

Answer: What I want to do is continue the relationships and communications that have been established with residents and businesses. I think it's my role to work with those people to address their needs and concerns.

Q: How familiar are you with the precinct?

A: We have 250 officers and supervisors in the precinct. A lot of great people at all levels. I've already gotten some calls from neighborhood leaders. It's not just the Police Department solving problems. We need to work together. What's an issue in the Biltmore is different than 19th Avenue and Camelback Road.

Q: How will you address crime issues?

A: My plan is to be open. Open communication with everybody in the community, the precinct to find ways to address issues. One of the things that will be very helpful will be my experience working here (at City Hall) with different departments. I know whom to call to seek assistance. We can get things accomplished.
