Thanks to Massage Envy, the Phoenix affiliate of Susan G. Komen for the Cure received more than $72,000 from the fourth annual Massage for the Cure. The national massage chain held the fundraiser earlier this month around the Valley, including in northeast Phoenix.
The Republic talked to Allison Levin, volunteer and special-events manager for the Phoenix affiliate of Susan G. Komen for the Cure, about the fundraiser.
How did this work?
Massage Envy gave out complimentary massages to the public, and they did ask for a donation in return for that. Even the entire staff gave up their tips for that day.
How much money was raised this year?
They had a record number this year. They raised over $72,000 in one day alone. One hundred percent will benefit Susan G. Komen for the Cure. And it's important to note that 75 percent will remain in our community. And the other 25 percent goes to Komen national for research. Last year, Massage Envy raised a little over $55,000.
How many massages does that translate into?
Last year, they gave about 1,700 massages. This year, they gave more than 2,260.
What will you do with money that will remain in the Valley?
We grant it out to other non-profit organizations. Every year we have a list of grantees that apply for a grant. This year we have about 30 grantees. That money is given out to the non-profit organizations for screening, treatment and education for the nine counties we serve in central and northern Arizona.
Why do you think Massage Therapy was able to raise more money than last year despite this difficult economy?
Many people have been directly and indirectly affected by breast cancer. I think the need to give back . . . is a sure statement that no matter what economic conditions we face, people are still very generous in giving back.
Who came up with this idea?
It was actually Massage Envy that came to us four years ago. The owner decided that Komen was a worthy non-profit to commit to and give back to.
