The Sunnyslope Kiwanis Club has begun its fourth season of distributing dictionaries to all third-graders in the Washington Elementary School District. Club members will give each student a dictionary with his or her name printed on a label.
Last year, the club presented nearly 3,000 dictionaries to students in the district and several charter schools in the Valley. Statewide, more than 71,000 dictionaries were presented to third-graders by various clubs and service organizations, including the Kiwanis Club.
The program was initiated by Annie Plummer in Georgia in 1992. She died in 1999. The program continues to grow with more than 9 million dictionaries handed out.
If you know of a private or charter school with third-graders who would like to have the dictionaries brought to the school, or if you would like to help with the distribution of the dictionaries, contact the club chairman of the project, Dale Swenson, at 602-999-1464 or weirson2@gmail.com.
