Work site checked over heat stroke claims

Gilbert police say federal safety inspectors have been called to check into working conditions at a Gilbert construction site after two workers were hospitalized for heat exposure last Thursday.

Workers also told police that a fellow crewmember died at the job site at 1530 Gilbert Road a few days before. No further details were available, and police did not immediately return phone calls seeking comment.

According to a police report released late Monday, workers Mark Anthony and Mark Rowley became ill Thursday around 2 p.m. at the work site near Gilbert and Ray roads.

A police officer performed CPR to try to revive 48-year-old Anthony, who was rushed to a nearby hospital with Rowley, 52.

Rowley has been discharged. Anthony's condition is unknown. Another worker got sick while firefighters and police were there and was treated at the scene.

Records kept by the National Weather Service in Phoenix show that the mercury reached 102 in the southeast Valley around the time of the incident.

Although no heat advisory has been issued recently, NWS meteorologists warn that during 100-plus degree days, people still need to take precautions - especially those who work outdoors - to reduce their exposure to the heat and to drink plenty of fluids.
