Have an a-moo-zing day of holiday fun with the cows at the Joy to the Herd Shamrock Farms Holiday Event.
The local dairy farm decided to join in the winter festivities a year ago by providing such features as a farm tour and offering seasonal dairy favorites, such as eggnog. Because of last year's popularity, this year has grown to a two-day event with added decorations and features.
"We wanted to add more value that is educational and hands-on," the farm's Molly Costam said. "It's a really fun experience to educate kids about the dairy."
Shamrock Farms routinely offers tours, but the special holiday tour takes you on a 45-minute drive around the farm and through the desert oasis where the cows eat and live. Hop out at Roxie's outdoor adventure and explore how milking equipment works and weave your way through the ice-cream maze. Kids can slide down the cottage-cheese tub or climb the 20-foot milk bottle.
The dairy is also transforming into a winter wonderland with 15 tons of snow. Bring scarves and mittens to build snowmen and make snow angels. Visit with the Shamrock spokescow, Roxie, and, of course, Santa Claus.
A new star to the event is Chef Elizabeth Milburn, who will be demonstrating such holiday recipes as hot peppermint chocolate milk and eggnog with cream.
Kids are invited to participate in arts and crafts and have their faces painted. Adults might want to check out the professional chef demonstrations. Enjoy free doughnuts and coffee as you listen to carolers singing your holiday favorites.
