Simplicity, food, fair prices work

As a redevelopment commissioner representing Gilbert's old downtown, I am privileged to receive insights from experts in the effective development of vibrant downtowns.

Over my four-year term on the Redevelopment Commission, a recurring key to downtown success has surfaced among the experts. Namely, "find what is working, and do more of it."

Gilbert has been blessed with this exact kind of growth in the downtown area. Specifically, under almost any measure, Joe's Real Barbecue, The Farmhouse, and now Oregano's, as part of the restaurant segment of the downtown, have been a raving success.

What makes them similar? They all focus on a simple concept, "food experience"- very high-quality food, good value and simplicity in their delivery.

Joe's is great barbecue in a farm setting. Pricing is reasonable, and the experience of a simpler past reverberates when you walk in the door.

The Farmhouse restaurant just screams "Grandma's home cookin.'" The setting is so simplified and reasonably priced that it just reminds people, like me, of home.

The newest member of the downtown restaurant experience is Oregano's. The owner, Mark Russell, has created such an authentic, great tasting, and value-driven Italian experience, that the restaurant is nearly always teeming with customers drawn from all over the area. Since I have never been to Italy, it gives me good vibes about the people, food and value I might find there.

So, what is the secret to all this success in the downtown? Simplicity, great food and fair prices.

The beauty of this formula is that soon, very soon, Joe (of the famous Joe's BBQ) will debut a new concept dining experience for the downtown, with the restoration of the old Liberty Market.

Located just diagonal to Joe's BBQ, this new coffee-bar, deli and unique market will once again, in my opinion, prove that simplicity, great food and fair prices are the secret to success.
