Before the clouds began to roll in on Oct. 4, bikers from across the East Valley enjoyed a relatively cool and clear morning on a scenic ride through the San Tan Mountains in support of Freedom Christian Academy's Freedom Ride.
Supporters of the ride came from Maricopa, Phoenix, Coolidge, Apache Junction, Chandler, Gilbert and Queen Creek to help make a difference in the lives of children. The school is raising funds for literacy, sports and art programs and extending its resources to community outreaches in the Queen Creek area.
The Freedom Ride began with a vision to bring the community together through a motorcycle ride. Bob Bidwell, from the motorcycle ministry at Spring of Life Church, took on an active role in organizing the ride, along with parents and staff at Freedom Christian Academy and Freedom Life Fellowship.
Bikers, who had not even heard of Freedom Christian Academy, were drawn to the school through announcements in various media outlets. Christian Motorcyclists Association bikers heard about the event through last month's Wheels of Grace Unity Ride in Phoenix and came in support of the students.
"It was amazing to see the different members of the community come together with a common bond to support our school," Principal Keather Healy said. "However, the ride became more than just a school fundraiser, but an event that brought everyone together to start something that would last more than just that one day."
This is Freedom Christian Academy's fourth school year supporting preschool through eighth grades, and adding one additional grade each year through the 12th grade. The school was founded by Pastor Calvin Lorts, his wife, Barbara, and Healy under the direction of The Great Commission Inc. and in partnership with Freedom Life Fellowship. Their more than 46 years of combined educational and ministerial experience has benefited the school and the Queen Creek community.
Freedom Christian Academy would like to thank all the bikers who came out to support the ride and the following sponsors: Office Max, Superstition Springs Harley Davidson, Arizona Kawasaki Victory, Champion Motorcycles, Trinity Embroidery, Uncle Bear's Bar and Grill, Paradise Bakery, Fry's and Bashas'.
