Fake-money suspect served time

SCOTTSDALE - One of two men accused in a Scottsdale counterfeiting case last week had served nearly three years in prison for a 1991 Arkansas shooting.

Shannon Joseph Daugherty pleaded guilty to first-degree assault and was sentenced to 13 1/2 years in an Arkansas prison. He was accused of getting into a fight with a man and shooting him Dec. 27, 1991. The shooting caused serious injuries, court records show.

Scottsdale police arrested Daugherty on Aug. 17 after they discovered evidence that he made nearly $6,000 in counterfeit bills at his Phoenix home.

Police also booked Daugherty on suspicion of illegally possessing a gun.

A Scottsdale police investigation of fake money passed at Skin Cabaret in Scottsdale Aug. 15 led to Daugherty, court documents said.

Police arrested James Clayton Johnson, 25, of Gilbert Aug. 16 for using the counterfeit bills the previous night at Skin Cabaret, court documents said. Police have not said what led them to Daugherty, who, they say, admitted making the bills with a printer-scanner.

Both men remain in jail. Daugherty's bond is set at $5,000. Johnson's is $3,600.

Johnson is due in Maricopa County Superior Court on Thursday for an unrelated probation violation.
