SCOTTSDALE - Incumbent Mayor Mary Manross has about four times more cash to spend on her campaign than opponent Councilman Jim Lane. The numbers come from the latest round of campaign-finance reports candidates filed with the Scottsdale City Clerk's Office on Thursday.
Manross has about $19,600 in cash on hand, while challenger Lane reported about $5,250. However, Lane has been outspending Manross by about $20,000. Lane also contributed $32,000 of his personal money to finance his mayoral run. Both Lane and Manross have been buying newspaper ads, mailers and television spots. Financial reports also show that Maricopa County Sheriff Joe Arpaio contributed $300 to the Lane 4 Scottsdale campaign, while Dan Harkins, owner of the Harkins Theatres movie chain, has given $390 to the Scottsdale for Manross 2008 campaign.
In the council race, where six candidates are vying for one of three seats, incumbents Betty Drake and Ron McCullagh have the most money available, with each reporting about $7,000 cash on hand. Drake and McCullagh were the two top vote getters in the September election. Newcomer Lisa Borowsky has spent the most on her campaign, with McCullagh and Suzanne Klapp following behind. Borowsky also has loaned more than $22,900 in personal money to her campaign, Borowsky for Scottsdale. After Klapp, who reported about $800 cash on hand, Tom Giller and Nan Nesvig have the least to spend.
