3 honored by diabetes foundation

SCOTTSDALE - The Juvenile Diabetes Research Foundation recently honored three Scottsdale residents for their commitments and contributions to raising money and awareness:

• Danielle Werstler, Giving Heart Award.

• Elyse and Ken Waters, Philanthropist of the Year award.

In addition, the foundation announced its 2009 board of directors, which includes Arizona Diamondbacks president Derrick Hall, a Paradise Valley resident.

The Juvenile Diabetes Research Foundation was founded in 1970 by the parents of children with juvenile diabetes, a disease that suddenly strikes children and makes them insulin-dependent for life. The disease also carries the constant threat of devastating complications.

Since its inception, the foundation has provided almost $1.2 billion for diabetes research worldwide. More than 85 percent of the foundation's expenditures directly support research and research-related education. The foundation's mission is constant: to find a cure for diabetes, and its complications, through the support of research.
