El Mirage county attorney to check residency of councilmen

The Maricopa County Attorney's Office has agreed to look into accusations that two El Mirage City Council members live outside the city, an El Mirage city official said.

In July, the Arizona Attorney General's Office declined to look into the case involving Councilmen Adam Super and Xavier Bedolla, citing a limited budget and lack of manpower.

El Mirage City Attorney Rick Flaaen on Wednesday said the county attorney's office agreed in early August to investigate the matter.

Flaaen said he met with an investigator on Aug. 20.

"They have agreed to investigate the matter," he said.

"I have spoken to their investigator and provided him documents he requested."

Flaaen said that the county attorney's investigator also spoke with both of the councilmen.

"But I have no knowledge, direct or otherwise, as to their conversation with him," Flaaen said.

The city indicated in July that Super did own a home in El Mirage, but listed his mailing address as a residence in Phoenix.

Bedolla does not own a home in El Mirage, and lists the address of his parent's home as his official address, city officials said. He recently bought a home in Waddell, an unincorporated area in the West Valley.

The city turned to the state Attorney General's Office on July 18. But in a July 25 letter, Assistant Attorney General Theodore Campagnolo suggested that the city turn to another city attorney's office to resolve the matter.
