New lifelong learning programs are emerging in the West Valley that are aimed at Baby Boomers interested in keeping their minds as active as their bodies.
RISE Learning for Life, a longtime Surprise organization, kicks off a series of free nighttime and weekend courses this week. RISE Extended Day classes will be offered Wednesday nights and Saturday mornings. The classes are free, one-time presentations.
RISE program coordinator Beth Stormont said the goal was to attract working Baby Boomers who would not be able to attend RISE's traditional weekday classes. However, the classes are open to everyone.
In Sun City, community members formed their own lifelong learning club after the ASU Osher Institute's partnership with the Recreation Centers of Sun City, Inc., ended earlier this year. The Sun City Lifelong Learning Club also will begin offering classes in November.
These new programs reflect the high demand and interest among community members for lifelong learning courses in the area.
Sun City West resident Charles Rassias, 80, signed up for several weekday classes through RISE to keep active intellectually and socialize with other people.
Rosemary Murphy of Sun City said she takes classes because it keeps her young. Murphy, who is in her 70s, has attended RISE for four years. She enjoys interacting with people from a variety of backgrounds.
"You never know what they're going to share with you," Murphy said.
