Final College 101 Fair is Monday

The Dysart Unified School District is offering the final College 101 Fair to high school students and parents Monday. The fair will be from 6 to 9 p.m. at Willow Canyon High School, 17901 W. Lundberg St., Surprise.

High school parents and students are invited to the College 101 Fair to receive information needed to plan for education after high school. High school students in the district will be able to meet with representatives from many colleges.

Colleges represented at the fair include Arizona State University, Northern Arizona University, University of Arizona, Universal Technical Institute, Maricopa Beauty College, Collins College, and Maricopa Community Colleges.

Dysart received 'Success' award

The Dysart Unified School District has been chosen to receive a 2008 Spotlight on Success Award from the Arizona Department of Education. The award is in recognition of the Dysart Read to Succeed program, which has transformed reading instruction in Dysart schools in Grades K-6.

The Dysart Read to Succeed program is a model built from the national Reading First initiative, identifying research-based practices aligned to increasing reading fluency and comprehension. The program utilizes effective classroom instruction through consistent professional development opportunities focused upon student engagement and a core academic curriculum.

Dysart's teaching staff has used the program to increase student achievement as measured by district benchmarks as well as the AIMS assessment. The Read to Succeed model also provides instructional support for teachers through a reading coach in each school building.

Read to Succeed has been implemented in all Dysart K-8 schools, and is facilitated by Adriel Grieshaber, Dysart's literacy coordinator.
