Avondale's unofficial historian named Billy Moore Heritage Days Parade grand marshal

Longtime Avondale clerk grand marshal for Heritage Days

When Avondale resident Linda Farris opened the door Monday morning, she wasn't expecting to see a crowd of 15 people, including Mayor Marie Lopez Rogers.

Armed with flowers, balloons and an oversize check marked "priceless," the group of city employees announced Farris had been named grand marshal of the Billy Moore Heritage Days Parade.

"I really didn't have any idea," Farris said.

Farris, an Avondale resident since 1974, served as city clerk for 33 years before retiring in June.

Her longtime connection to the community made her a natural choice, said Avondale spokeswoman Ingrid Melle. Farris also is the city's unofficial historian.

"She knows everything (about) back in the day, before all the development," Melle said.

Farris was overwhelmed by the surprise, but instantly accepted the city's offer.

"I'm excited and very honored," she said, wiping her eyes.

Her grandchildren will join her in the parade, Farris said.

Ruth Espinoza, Avondale's recreation coordinator, was part of the parade grand marshal surprise patrol. She said Farris is a big part of the event's success.

"She's been the heart and soul of Billy Moore for over 25 years," Espinoza said.
