Tolleson police Explorers are hosting a 3-mile Fun Walk/Run on Saturday to benefit the families of officers killed or injured in the line of duty.
The police Explorers program teaches teenagers interested in law enforcement what it's like to be a police officer. The 10 students involved decided on the event as a service project to go along with their program.
"The whole idea was kids that want to be cops helping cops," said Officer Dan Wilde, an adviser to the Explorers.
The event is from 8 to 11 a.m. at Tolleson Veterans Park at 8601 W. Van Buren St. Registration is $20 and available the morning of the event. The cost includes a T-shirt, lunch and free massages for runners from a massage therapist.
Proceeds will go to the 100 Club of Arizona, a non-profit organization that provides financial help and emotional support to families of officers killed or injured. No fundraising goals have been set, but Wilde said he hopes the event is a success.
"We're hoping to do it annually from now on," he said.
