Student in hospital after school bus crash in Avondale

A collision involving a school bus Thursday morning sent one student and two other passengers to Valley hospitals with minor injuries, Avondale police said.

The bus, which held 40 middle school students, collided with a Dodge Magnum and a white van at 127th Avenue and Indian School Road in Avondale around 8 a.m.

Police said the bus was in the intersection turning left as the light turned yellow when the Magnum ran a red light. It hit the bus on its front passenger side. The impact caused the bus to swerve into a van that was turning left in another lane.

Police said the driver of the Magnum will likely be cited.

A female passenger and an infant in the Magnum had no visible injuries, but were sent to St. Joseph's Hospital as a precaution.

An 11-year-old female student on the bus was sent to West Valley Hospital in Goodyear for possible minor injuries.

After paramedics checked every student for injuries, another bus arrived to take them to Wigwam Middle School in the Litchfield Elementary district. A crisis intervention team from the Avondale fire department met them there to provide counseling, a fire official said.
