Raceway Elks to become state's newest lodge

Avondale resident Michelle Schwartz updates readers on the Southwest Valley's newest community service group.

Some said it would never happen, but on Saturday, the Arizona Elks Association will institute Raceway Elks as the state's newest lodge, No. 2852.

Less than a year after The Republic first reported that this new lodge was planned, membership has grown to more than the requisite 100, a lease has been signed for meeting space, and members are actively involved in community service in the Southwest Valley.

Saturday's institution, installation of officers and initiation of new members will be hosted by Phoenix West Lodge No. 2729 in Glendale and will be attended by Elks dignitaries from around the state.

John Stergulz will be the new lodge's first Exalted Ruler.

The planning committee has thought of every detail to make this a very special and memorable event for the approximately 200 who will attend.

Thank you to committee Chairwoman Judi Melott, and committee members Olive Brook, Sharon Kendrick, Christy Ryan, Elaine Ryan, Brandi Shannon and Chris Venturini.

Dedicated to community service and fellowship, the Elks focuses on children, veterans and the disabled, giving time and money to make a difference locally and nationally.

The Raceway Elks is in Avondale. Anyone 21 and older may apply to become an Elk.
