One person died in a one-vehicle rollover early Wednesday morning in the far Northwest Valley area, said Arizona Department of Public Safety officials.
DPS reported the incident occurred about 3:36 a.m. on U.S. 60 at milepost 128.6, in Wittmann.
The victim has yet to be identified.
Maricopa County Sheriff's Office spokesman Detective Aaron Douglas said the incident began as a traffic stop that turned into a pursuit when the subject took off.
Douglas said the pursuit was then called off and several minutes later, deputies found the vehicle had rolled over.
MCSO traffic units were called out to the scene and have taken over the investigation.
U.S. 60 at that milepost has been closed in both directions.
As of 7 a.m., officials said southbound traffic is being diverted from U.S. 60 onto State Route 74 to 211th Ave and to Center Street and back onto U.S. 60. Northbound traffic is being diverted from U.S. 60 onto Center Street to 211th Ave to State Route 74 and back to U.S. 60.
It is unclear when that stretch of highway will be reopened.
Investigators are at the scene and asking for the public's help in this case. DPS Lt. James Warriner said the rollover may have been witnessed by a couple vehicles passing by.
Anyone with information is asked to call the DPS Duty Office at 602-223-2212.
