Police ID couple hit by freight train in Surprise

Surprise police have identified the couple seriously injured last week when their car was struck by a freight train.

Iris Kissner, 70, was treated and released at an area hospital, while her husband, Joseph Kissner, 84, remains hospitalized in stable condition, Surprise polices spokesman Sgt. Mark Ortega said earlier this week.

The incident occurred shortly before 9:30 a.m. on Nov. 14, when the Kissners were traveling south at Dysart and Grand avenues.

The crossing arms at the BNSF Railway tracks came down on their vehicle and "they froze there," said Assistant Fire Chief Kevin Pool.

The two were extricated from their car, which was destroyed by the train, and flown to medical treatment.

As of late in the week, police had no updates on the investigation.
