Heard West offers summer activities

The Heard Museum West in Surprise is operating on summer hours, 10 a.m. to 5 p.m. Thursday-Saturday, through Sept. 30.

Upcoming events:

Target Free Summer Saturdays, July 5, 12, 19 and 26, 10 a.m. to 5 p.m.: Everyone receives free admission to Heard Museum West on July Saturdays, thanks to a grant from Target. Examine tiny works of art donated by local West Valley residents in the exhibition Gifts From the Community, and experience the rich cultures of the American Indian peoples of Arizona in Our Stories: American Indian Art and Culture in Arizona.

"Summer Docs" at Heard Museum West: Miss Navajo, July 11, 10 a.m.: Enjoy thought-provoking documentary films at Heard Museum West, offered on select Fridays throughout the summer. Miss Navajo (60 minutes) showcases the Miss Navajo Nation pageant, revealing the importance of cultural preservation and the meaning of being a Navajo woman.

"Summer Docs" at Heard Museum West: Hopi Songs from the Fourth World, July 18, 10 a.m.: Enjoy thought-provoking documentary films at Heard Museum West, offered on select Fridays throughout the summer. Hopi Songs from the Fourth World (58 minutes) is a compelling study of the Hopi that captures their deep spirituality and reveals their integration of art and daily life.

"Summer Docs" at Heard Museum West: Salmon Forest, July 25, 10 a.m.: Enjoy thought-provoking documentary films at Heard Museum West, offered on select Fridays throughout the summer. Salmon Forest (52 minutes) reveals the fragile connection between salmon, bears, trees, and people in the Northwest Coast region.

Deadline for Wacky Wild Workshops, July 25: Don't miss the chance to make your own artwork with Heard Museum West's Wacky Wild Workshops for children and adults in August.

Wacky Wild Workshops for Children, 10 a.m. to 3 p.m.: Children ages 8 to 15 can get hands-on with a variety of one-day Saturday workshops at Heard Museum West. Cost per workshop is $12 for Heard Museum members and $15 for non-members and includes all materials and instruction. Lunch not included. Enrollment is limited and advance registration is required.
