Morristown library hosts reading program for kids

Linda de Berge submitted this information about a summer reading program.

The Morristown Volunteer Library will host a Summer Reading Program through July 17 with prizes for kids, and one grand prize of four free Harkins movie theater tickets and two free popcorns.

The library is open Thursdays from 3-7 p.m. in the Old Main Building on Rockaway Hills Road in Morristown. Everything is free, all staff are volunteers and books are loaned on the honor system.

In addition, on Thursday mornings from 10 to 11:30 a.m. through July 17, a story time for children is offered every half hour. Parents are welcome to bring their children.

The library has books kids can read to complete all the county and state summer reading programs for kids and teens. The Volunteer Library has hundreds of children's books, teen science fiction, fantasy, mysteries, thrillers, and adult fiction plus biographies, histories and science books. The children's area is a fun place for kids to be with its big green stuffed turtle.

For more information, contact Bernadine McCollum at 623-388-9613.

General Federated Woman's Club of Morristown worked through the Maricopa County Library District and the Morristown Elementary School District Governing Board to set up the Volunteer Library.

Maricopa County Library District donated 500 current release adult books and will refresh them quarterly. Phoenix Public Library Friends donated 250 children's books, with more to come.

The GFWC has been working since 2004 with the Maricopa County Library District to get a library for the Morristown, Circle City, Wittmann area. GFWC worked with the district to bring bookmobile service to Circle City on a bi-weekly basis in 2006-07. Due to county budget cuts, the service stopped. GFWC will continue to work with the county to get a full-service library for these communities.
