'10,000 BC' gets DVD hat trick

Warner Home Video's 10,000 BC scored a triple victory for the week ended June 29, topping the national DVD sales and rental charts as well as the Blu-ray Disc sales chart its first week in stores.

The $94.8 million theatrical hit, a prehistoric epic that cost more than $100 million to make, easily beat Paramount's The Spiderwick Chronicles for the No. 1 slot on the Nielsen VideoScan First Alert sales chart, racking up about 25 percent more sales than the children's fantasy, which earned $71.2 million at the box office.

10,000 BC also topped Home Media Magazine's video rental chart for the week, generating about 20 percent more activity than second-ranked Fool's Gold, also from Warner, which was No. 1 the previous week.

Spiderwick bowed at No. 3 on the rental chart and generated about 76 percent as much activity as did 10,000 BC.

Universal's romantic comedy Definitely, Maybe debuted at No. 3 on First Alert, followed at No. 4 by Fool's Gold, the previous week's top seller.

On the rental chart, Definitely, Maybe was No. 6.

Also new to the First Alert sales chart was Fox's Futurama the Movie: The Beast With a Billion Backs, the latest direct-to-video feature film based on the TV series. It debuted at No. 6, a strong start for a DTV release.

On the Blu-ray chart, 10,000 BC easily took the top spot, with second-ranked Spiderwick selling just 31 percent as many copies, according to Nielsen VideoScan data.
