Please watch out for pet ads that offer free or greatly reduced prices on animals who need to be shipped from overseas. Be careful responding to ads with just an e-mail address or phone number that turns out to be non-working. These ads might be fraudulent.

Here are some tips to avoid scams when searching for a puppy online:

• Call the seller. Beware of sellers who list only an e-mail address or who have local telephone numbers that are disconnected or connect to a church or business that has nothing to do with the ad.
• Try to get a physical address, not a post office box, and phone number.
• Never wire money to buy a puppy on the Internet.
• Be careful when dealing with people or companies outside of your country. Their country's laws could pose issues if you have a problem with the transaction.
• Be cautious of sellers who use free e-mail services where a credit card isn't required to open an account.
• Ask if the breeder is a member of an American Kennel Club-affiliated club, and contact that club to verify membership. Request references, and speak to other people who have purchased dogs from this breeder, especially if the breeder does not live near you.
• Report scams. Anyone who has experienced a dog-related scam should report it to local law enforcement and the Better Business Bureau.
