Nearly 500 firefighters are working to contain the fire sparked Saturday night after a lost hiker set a signal fire for search and rescue crews, said Darrell Willis, chief of the Arizona Central West Zone Incident Management Team Operation Section.
Prescott National Forest spokeswoman Debbie Maneely says the community of Crown King is still considered threatened as the fire is now within a half mile of it.
Firefighters have set up a line along the Senator Highway to prohibit the fire from coming into the town of about 400 residents.
Strong winds fueling the fire are expected to continue through Monday, according to the National Weather Service.
About 120 residents voluntarily evacuated Sunday and only ten remained Monday, Yavapai County sheriff's Official Steve Skurja said.
Fire officials were using helicopters and air tankers because the steep and rugged terrain of the land. Larger aircraft have not been able to reach the fire because of the narrow canyons in the area, Skurja said.
Mayer High School is being used as a temporary shelter for evacuees. Eight Red Cross volunteers are stationed at the school in the nearby town of Mayer providing shelter, water and food, Red Cross spokesman Tracey Kiest said.
No injuries have been reported.
