Battle named AZ's top track athlete

Phoenix Desert Vista graduate Allante Battle was recognized by Gatorade as the Boy Track and Field Athlete of the Year in Arizona.

Battle, who will play football and run track at Arizona State, won the Class 5A Division I title in the 400 meters in 47.12 seconds. He also was part of Desert Vista's 4x400 relay thatset a state record in 3 minutes, 13.50 seconds at the state championships. Battle was second in the 100 and 200 at state.

He recently ran the 100 in 10.43 seconds and the 200 in 21.19 seconds at the Great Southwest Track Classic in Albuquerque. Battle at one point in his high school career held seven of the school's 17 track records.

He won four state championships his junior season.
