Where to stay

Jun. 9, 2006 04:34 PM

Paul Simon writes, "Everybody loves the sound of a train in the distance, everybody thinks it's true."

The train ain't so dreamy when it blares you awake all hours of the night. That's the trick for lodging in Flagstaff, knowing where in relation to the rail line you are and how lightly you sleep.

It's not as automatic a decision as one thinks, in large part because some of the most charming bed and breakfasts and the two historic hotels are smack downtown — right where the train station is located.

Hotel Weatherford
Built in the late 1800s, this three-story landmark was a celebrated, elegant hotel where guests partied hearty on the top floor. It has weathered a major fire and a planned demolition. Today, the hotel offers quaint but no-frills lodging: The rooms are tiny, just big enough for a double bed, a night stand and lamp, with bathrooms that you step up to and that wouldn't accommodate more than one person at a time. The are three pubs on the premises, including one on the first floor with a big-screen TV, and Charly's, one of the better eateries around town. $50-$55 a night. 23 N. Leroux St. (928) 774-2731.

The Inn at 410 Bed & Breakfast
Within walking distance of restaurants and shops, this b&b boasts nine distinctly decorated rooms, ranging from Sunflowers Fields upstairs, with white wicker rockers and a seating panel along one of its windows to The Tea Room, with Victorian roses, teapots, original mahogany woodwork, and a Jacuzzi nook with fireplace. Award-winning breakfasts - the likes of lemon zesty egg puffs, a light lemony baked omelette and curried cornbread pudding - are served each morning and can be eaten at one of the four tables in the living room or in the garden gazebo. A big plus: a paved, private parking lot on the side of the buiding. $135-$190 a night. 410 N. Leroux St. (928) 774-0088 or 1-800-774-2008.

Comfi Cottages of Flagstaff
For those who like having the place to themselves, this operation offers six cottages near the historic downtown, from a one-bedroom, one-bath cottage to a four-bedroom, two-bath home. Each of the rentals provides breakfast foods you can prepare, as well as a picnic table, barbecue grill and picnic baskets. In addition, guests have access to cable TV, VCR, telephone, bicycles and tennis rackets. $120-$260 per night, with additional charges depending on number of guests. 1612 N. Aztec St. (928) 774-0731 or (888) 774-0731.

Jeanette's Bed & Breakfast
An intimate romantic b&b nestled against the backdrop of Mt. Elden. The Victorian-styled home features fireplaces, private baths and fresh flowers in each of its four rooms. Special touches include vintage clawfoot tubs and antiques, such as a 1894 San Rafael fainting couch and a dental cabinet that the operators dress up as an armoire. The spacious porch sports rockers, tin wash tubs and a swing chair. Breakfast in bed is offered. Two minor drawbacks: The house sits right in front of a paved street that sees regular traffic, and the rear is fenced off. $119-$145 per night. 3380 E. Lockett Road. (928) 527-1912 or 1-800-782-1912.

Arizona Dog Sled Inn
About eight miles south of Flagstaff, on the edge of the forest, this b&b offers guests a mountain getaway. The modern, custom-built mountain lodge has 10 rooms on two floors: The difference is, there's no air conditioning available on rooms on the first floor, which can be quite a whoop when the windows are open on summer nights and the owners' 14 Siberian Huskies in nearby pens are howling. Breakfast, pleasantly, is served during a three-hour window, in part because the kitchen caters to the general public as well. Beware if you're staying during the winter months, when snow and ice may make traveling into town a slow task. $95-$185 per night for double occupancy, reduced rates for singles. 10155 Mountainaire Road (Exit 333 off Interstate 17). 1-800-754-0664.
